About Us

The Club. The Probus Club of St Albans is primarily a luncheon club for retired professional and business men providing regular opportunities for them to meet others with like interests. With a membership of approximately 70, lunchtime meetings are held monthly. There is also a wide range of optional activities that are open to wives and widows – see below.

The Club is run through a Committee elected at an Annual General Meeting, assisted by Sub-committees, as necessary. It is self-financing and non-profit making. It is not involved in fund raising and costs are kept to a reasonable level.

Club lunches. These take place on the last Thursday of each month at Verulam Golf Club. We first assemble in the bar before sitting down for a two-course lunch. This is usually followed by a speaker.

Wives, partners and widows run an associated Group that organises its own lunches. They join with us for our Special Christmas Lunch.

Coffee mornings. Monthly coffee mornings are held on the second Thursday of each month at the same venue. They are informal and last about an hour. The ladies organise their own coffee mornings.

Days out. Regular day trips are arranged to a wide variety of destinations, including places of historic interest, cathedrals, stately homes and gardens. Travel is usually by coach or by train.

Theatre trips. For those interested in theatre, opera or ballet, outings are organised to venues within a reasonable distance of St Albans. Recent visits have included Milton Keynes, Aylesbury, Stevenage and Guildford.

Computer forum. We run a computer forum from time to time to review home computer usage. It aims to provide a venue for the exchange of experiences and to provide technical advice to members.

Rambles. Every month we offer a short ramble of 3 – 4 miles. These follow an easy terrain, taking a circular route that starts and finishes at a pub.

Annual holidays. An annual holiday is arranged for members and ladies. It generally lasts 5-6 days, staying at reasonably priced hotels, and including a full programme of days out.
